Merchant Navy

Merchant Navy service records are particularly fascinating. The Caird Library at the National Maritime Museum is a valuable resource in researching your merchant navy ancestors, but you can also access some records via the National Archives at Kew and online at www.findmypast.co.uk.

Amongst my own ancestors I can count at least five merchant mariners...Cardiganshire family histories are littered with this occupation ... Including my grandfather Benjamin Arthur Thomas who lost his life when his ship was torpedoed off Rockall during World War II.
